THESIS AN ANALYSIS ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THECONVERSATION MADE BY THEELEVENTHGRADESTUDENTS OF SMANEGERI 5 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015



ABSTRACT


This study is entitled “An Analysis on Grammatical Errors in the Conversation Made by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the School Year 2014-2015”.It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) What kinds of errors are committed by eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in school year 2014/2015in the conversation? (2) What are the most common of grammatical errors encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the conversation? The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To describe and explain kinds of errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in school year 2014/2015 in the conversation. (2) To describe and explain the most common grammatical errors encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the conversation. In this study the writer used “descriptive method” to find out and to know the types and the most grammatical errors made by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the conversation. The aim of the method is to describe the facts found in a study. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2014-2015. Total numbers of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang especially natural scinces class were 152. The writer chose 22 students from XI gradeofnatural science 1 which consist of 38 students as the sample of the study. In collecting data, the writer used conversation. The topicswere:Love, Daily Activities, Smoking, Facebook and Alcohol. The result of the analysis shows that the total number of errors is 88. The types of grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in school year 2014/2015 in the conversation are Misformation 39(44.31%), Omission 33(37.5%), Addition 9 (10.22%), and Misordering 7 (7.95%). The most frequent errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang is misformation.Based on the result of the study, the writer offers some suggestions as follows:(1)The students should learn more on how to make a good conversation focusing on grammatical aspects regarding tenses, verb, preposition, auxiliary verb, article, and conjunction because grammatical rules of English play an important role to convey and receive the message. It makes the message get across easily.(2) The English teachers should pay more attention on the students’ grammatical errors by providing practices on grammatical aspects particularly tenses, verb, preposition, auxiliary verb, article, and conjunction when he is teaching.
