ABSTRACT

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN IDENTIFYING GENERIC STRUCTURE OF NARRATIVE TEXT OF EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK St. MARIA ASSUMPTA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015.”This study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1).Are the students of the eighth grade of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang able to identify the generic of narrative text? 2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang in identifying the generic structure of narrative text? Based on the statement of the problems above, the following are the objectives of the study: 1).To find out if the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang able to identify the generic of narrative text. 2) To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang in identifying the generic structure of narrative text? The method used in this study was Descriptive Method. This method was employed in order to describe the problems of the study and to describe the result of the study. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang in the school year 2014 / 2015 that consists of 23 students of class B. In collecting the data, the writer used reading test. The testwasconsisted of narrative texts prepared by the writer. The result of this study showed in general that the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta Kupang in the school year 2014 / 2015 are able to identify the generic structure of narrative text, and their ability level is 80.86 or “Good”. Although the ability level is good(80.86), as whole class, there was one (1) student who failed the test. Therefore the teacher of English is expected to encourage the students especially failed one to keep learning about narrative text and how to identify the generic structure of narrative text.
