ABSTRACTrnThis study is entitled “A Study on Terms of Address used in Rendu Dialectrnof Nagekeo Language”. This study was conducted to answer the followingrnquestions: (1) What are the terms used in Rendu dialect for addressing people? (2)rnHow to address people based on family relationship and non family relationship?rnThe result of the study is useful for both the academic world and the practicalrnlife of society, especially the native speakers of Rendu of Nagekeo Regency. Thernstudy was conducted in Rendu Butowe village, Aesesa Selatan District, NagekeornRegency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The data were obtained through interview.rnThe data show that the terms of address used in Rendu can be classified on theirrnfamily relationship and non family relationships, their age, gender and social status.rnIn social status, the writer classifies into three categories: higher status, the same andrnlower status.rnRendu society uses the forms of address to keep their relationship with otherrnpeople. Some terms of address in family relationship that can be used in non familyrnrelationship are like: Ine ‘mother’, Ema ‘father’, Nara ‘brother’, Weta ‘sister’, Azirn‘brother’. They used these term because the addresser has relationship with thernaddressee, their degree of familiarity, and their power in relation to each other. Theyrncan address people based on age, gender, and social status. In Rendu society, forrnhigher status, the addresser use the terms ine, ema. The same and lower status, thernaddresser uses the terms ine, ema, ka’e, azi, and doa/mokodoa. The terms of address,rnlike ine, ema, nara, weta, ta’u can be used to address unfamiliar people.rnThe Rendu people are suggested to keep speaking their language, especiallyrnthe terms of address to keep good social relationship in communication.
