A Study on errors in the conversation of the eleventh gradestudents of SMAN 1 Atambua in the school year 2012/2013



ABSTRACTrnThis study is entitled “A Study on Errors in the Conversation of the EleventhrnGrade Students of SMAN 1 Atambua in the School Year 2012/2013”. It aimsrnat discovering or finding out the answer of the following questions: (1) what arernthe types of errors occurring in the conversation of the eleventh grade students ofrnSMAN 1 Atambua? (2) What is the most common type of errors occurring in thernconversation of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Atambua? To support thisrnstudy, the writer used several related books to support this writing in terms ofrnideas and general knowledge concerning the study. The method used in this studyrnwas descriptive method. The study was conducted at SMAN 1 Atambua. Thernsubjects of the study were 20 students of language class of the second year in thernschool year 2012 / 2013. In collecting the data, the writer gave some topics chosenrnby the students to make a simple conversation. The instrument used wasrnconversation. The result of the study shows that: (1). The types of errors made byrnlanguage class of the second year students are: Tenses, The Auxiliary System,rnPart of Speech, the Passive Sentences and some other grammatical errors asrnarticle, gerund, word order, infinitive, and determiner. (2). The most frequentlyrngrammatical errors made by language class of the second year students are in thernfollowing linguistic categories: (a).Parts of Speech (67.38%) which predominatedrnby Verb (19.56%) and followed by preposition (19.56%), noun (13.04%), pronounrn(6.52%), article (6.52%), adjective (2.17%). (b).Tenses (28.27%) whichrnpredominated by Simple Present Tense (21.73%), Simple Past Tense (2.17%) andrnsimple future tense (2.17%) followed by Present Perfect Continuous (2.17%). (c).rnModal Auxiliary System (4.34%). Based on the result above, the writer suggestsrn(1). The students should learn on how to make a good conversation focusing onrngrammar, because the grammatical rules of English play an important role tornconvey and receive the message. It makes the message get across easily. (2). Thernteacher should pay more attention on the students‟ grammar when he is teaching.
