A STUDY ON LITERAL READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF GRADE TENTH STUDENTS OF SMA MUHAMMADIYAH KUPANG IN THE SCHOOLrnYEAR 2012/2013



ABSTRACTrnThis study is entitled “A Study on Reading Comprehension Ability of the GradernTenth Students of SMA Muhammadiyah Kupang in the School Year 2012 / 2013.rnThis study was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) Do graderntenth students of SMA Muhammadiyah Kupang in the school year 2012/2013rncomprehend the reading text they have read? (2) What is the level of ability of thernGrade Tenth students of SMA Muhammadiyah Kupang in the school yearrn2012/2013 in comprehending reading text? (3) What is the area of difficulty for thernstudents in comprehending the text? (1) To find out whether grade tenth students ofrnSMA Muhammadiyah Kupang in the school year 2012/2013 are able torncomprehend the reading text or not. (2) To find out the level of ability of the graderntenth students of SMA Muhammadiyah Kupang in the school year 2012/2013 inrncomprehending reading text. (3) To find out the area of difficulty for the students inrncomprehending the text. Method used in this study was descriptive method. Therntotal respondents were 30 students and all of them were included while therninstrument used in gathering the needed data was test. The test consisted of 10rnitems of multiple choice and 10 matching. The result of analysis indicated that therngrade tenth students of SMA Muhammadiyah Kupang comprehend the reading textrnthey have read, and their level of comprehension are as follows. One (3%) studentsrngot excellent level of ability (9.6 – 10). Nine (30%) students got good level ofrnability (7.6 – 8.5). Eight (27%) students got fairly good level of ability (6.6 – 7.5).rnSix (20%) students got average level of ability (5.6 - 6.5). Four (13%) students gotrnbelow average level of ability (4.6 – 5.5). Two (7%) students got poor level ofrnability (3.6 – 4.5). The overall ability of the students is fairly good. Although as arnclass the students have ability in reading comprehension. Some student still havernproblems with the content of the reading text maybe because of their poorrnvocabulary or poor mastery on grammer. Therefore the writer porposes arnsuggestion for the English teacher of the researched school. He or she shouldrnencourage students to enrich their vocabulary because some students committedrnmistakes regarding the choice of proper vocabulary and also drill the students torncomprehend the idea found in the reading text.
