AN ANALYSIS OF TEACHER AND STUDENT’S TALK IN ENGLISH CLASSROOM INTERACTION OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 1 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2013/2014
ABSTRACTrnThis thesis is entitled “An Analysis of Teacher and Student’s Talk in EnglishrnClassroom Interaction of The Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 1 Kupang In thernSchool 2013/2014”. The study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1)rnWhat kinds of categories of talk does the teacher use in classroom interaction at therneighth grade class of SMPN 1 Kupang? (2) What kinds of categories of talk do thernstudents use in classroom interaction at the eighth grade class of SMPN 1 Kupang?rn(3) Who is more dominant during the teaching and learning process? Based on thernproblem, the objectives of this study are, (1) to identify the categories of talk thernteacher use in the classroom interaction. (2) To identify the categories of talk thernstudents use in the classroom interaction. (3) To determine who is more dominantrnduring the classroom interaction, teacher or students. In order to answer thesernquestions, the writer took the data by videotaping the teaching learning process. Therndata was analyzed by using qualitative method. Based on the results and findings ofrnthe study during class time, the writer found that, 1) the kinds of teacher talk thatrnoccurred in the classroom interaction are: (Direct influence) ; giving directions is (43rncases) 16.92%, giving information is (8 cases) 3.14%, criticizes students behavior isrn(2 cases) 0.76%; while indirect influence consists of asking questions is (52 cases)rn20.47%, praising or encouraging is (50 cases) 19.68%, uses ideas of students is (24rncases) 9.44%, repeating students response verbatim is (2 cases) 0.76%. so the totalrnpercentage of teacher talk both for direct and indirect influences is 71.25%. 2) Thernstudent talk and that occurred in the classroom interaction are (direct influence) ;rnsilence is (9 cases) 2.5%, laughter is (1 cases) 0.38% while( indirect influence);rnstudents response choral is (41 cases) 19.52%, students response open-ended orrnstudents initiated is (18 cases) 7.08%, and students response specific is (2 cases)rn0.76%. So the total percentage of students talk both of direct and indirect influence isrn27.95%. The figure illustrated that the teacher talk is higher than students talk. In factrnthat both of teacher and students talk are not balanced. Teacher talks have impact onrnstudents learning are giving directions, giving information, asking question andrnpraising or encouraging. Teacher has own style to make students active byrnmentioning their name to answer the question to do the task from the teacher. Basedrnon the result of the study the writer would like to offer suggestions for Englishrnteacher of the SMPN 1 KUPANG. The teacher should apply effective teaching byrnsetting up interactive activities such as group discussion, small group work and manyrnothers that involve collaboration and self initiated language which provide greaterrnopportunities for students to speak and participate in classroom interaction.
