ABSTRACTrnThis study is entitled “ An Analysis on the Translation From Bahasa Indonesia into English of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN5 Kupang in the School Year 20112/2013”. It was conducted to answer the following questions : (a) Is the translation done by eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang good or bad? (b) What are the sorts of difficulties faced by eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in translating from Bahasa Indonesia into English? The objectives of study are (a) To know whether or not the translation done by eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang from Bahasa Indonesia into English is good or bad. (b) to find out difficulties faced by eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in translating from Bahasa Indonesia into English. To do this study the writer used the descriptive method. The subject of the study on eighth grade students of SMPN 5 Kupang in the school year 2012/2013. The total number of the students was 40 and the writer treated them all as respondents. The instrument used in this research was translation task. The writer gave the students a text of folktale written in Bahasa Indonesia and the students translated into English. The result of the test shows that the students are able to translate the text. There are 40 students who translated the text and the text consist of 23 had 920 translated sentences. Based on intensive analysis then she found that there were 75% or 30 students making good translation where their translations are dynamic equivalence; the form of their translation is restrucrured in different syntax and lexical to present the same meaning. However some of them 30% or 10 students made bad translation because they found difficulties in part of vocabularies and grammar so the meaning is lost or distorted. Based on the result of the study the writer suggests (a) English teacher of SMPN 5 Kupang should pay close attention especially in the part of grammar and vocabulary.
