ABSTRACTrnThis study is entitled “A Study on the Segmental Phonemes of Tetun LanguagernSpoken in Lidak in Comparison with those of English”. It was conducted inrnorder to answer the following questions (1). What are the segmental phonemes ofrnTetun spoken in Lidak? (2). What are the syllabic structures of Tetun spoken inrnLidak? The main problem of the study is to find out the segmental phonemes ofrntetun language of spoken in Lidak. The methods used in this study wasrncomparative method. The purpose of this method is to find out and to describe thernsegmental phonemes of tetun spoken in Lidak. The instrument used by the writer inrngathering the needed data were direct interview and recording. The informantsrnwere asked to translate the sentences that have been prepared by the writer fromrnIndonesian language into Tetun language. The result of the study shows that Tetunrnlanguage spoken in Lidak has consonants, vowels and consonant clusters. In Tetunrnlanguage spoken in Lidak there are twelve consonants, they are: /t/, /‘/, /h/, /f/, /n/,rn/r/, /d/, /k/, /s/, /b/, /m/, and /l/. Vowels are five, they are: /a/, /u/, /e/, /o/, /i/, andrnConsonant clusters are five, they are: /kd/, /kr/, /kn/, /kl/ and /kb/. Realizing thatrnthis study is limited only to segmental phonemes, so the writer suggests, that otherrnpeople may do another study on Tetun language spoken in lidak particularly aboutrnsupra segmental phonemes. It is also suggested that those who are going to teachrnthe students speaking tetun language must pay attention primarily the segmentalrnphonemes and syllable structure of tetun language and pronounce English soundsrnas pronounced by native of English. They must, there for, pay attention to differentrnsounds of tetun language and English.
