ABSTRACTrnThis study is entitled “A Study on the Mastery of WH-Questions in Simple PresentrnTense and Past Tense of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Kefamenanu in thernSchool Year 2013/2014”. It was conducted in order to answer the following questions:rn(1) Have the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kefamenanu mastered the use ofrnWh-question in Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense? (2) What is the level ofrnthe eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kefamenanu in mastering the use of Whquestionrnin Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense? (3) What might be the area ofrndifficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kefamenanu inrnmastering the use of Wh-question in Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense?rnWhile the objective of the study: (1) to find out whether the eighth grade students ofrnSMP Negeri 1 Kefamenanu have mastered the use of Wh-question in Simple PresentrnTense and Simple Past Tense of sentences.(2) to find out the level of the eighth gradernstudents of SMP Negeri 1 Kefamenanu in mastering the use of the Wh-question inrnSimple Present Tense, and Simple Past Tense of sentences. (3) to find out therndifficulties that are faced by students in mastering grammar of English in using Whquestionrnin Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense of sentences. The writer chosern35 students to be the sampel of the study. The instrument of this study was test. Itrnconsisted of 30 items. The method used in this study was descriptive. The result of thisrnstudy shows that the eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kefamenanu have masteredrnthe use of Wh-question in Simple Present Tense and Simple Past Tense, the level ofrnmastery of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kefamenanu in using Whquestionsrnis “Good” (8.08). It is shown by eight students (22.85%) who got very good,rntwenty one students (60%) got good, five students (14.29%) got fairly good, and onernstudent (2.86 %) got average. The students easily did the test on the multiple choice testrnrather than on simple completion test. The total percentage for both of the test is 86.57rn% for multiple choice and 70 % for the simple completion test. The students committedrnthe most errors in using Wh-questions in simple present tense and simple past tense isrn“who” in number 7, 11 and 19 on test I and number 5, 9, 6 on test II. The difficultiesrnfaced by eighth grade students of SMP N 1 Kefamenanu lie on using Who functioning asrnsubject, Whose functioning as possessive, Whom functioning as object and What. Basedrnon the result of this study the following are some suggestions that need to be considered:rn(1) The teacher should give more explanation and exercises on the use of Wh-questionsrnto the students in order that their mastery level is better. (2) The students must improverntheir knowledge about using Wh-questions in simple present tense and simple past tensernand apply it through language skills that are listening, speaking, reading and writing.
