ABSTRACTrnThis study entitled “A STUDY ON READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OFrnEIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP BERINGIN KUPANG IN THErnSCHOOL YEAR 2013/2014”. It aims to answer the following questions: (1) Arernthe eighth grade students of SMP Beringin Kupang in the school year 2013/2014rnable to comprehend reading text? (2) What is the level of ability of the eighth gradernstudents of SMP Beringin Kupang in the school year 2013/2014 in comprehendingrnreading text? (3) What are mistakes done by the eighth grade students of SMPrnBeringin Kupang in the school year 2013/2014 in comprehending reading teaxt?rnThe objectives of the study are: (1) to find out whether the eighth grade students ofrnSMP Beringin Kupang in the school year 2013/2014 are able to comprehendrnreading text or not? (2) to find out level of ability of the eighth grade students ofrnSMP Beringin Kupang in the school year 2013/2014 in comprehending readingrntext. (3) to find the mistakes done by the eighth grade students of SMP BeringinrnKupang in the school year 2013/2014 in comprehending reading text. For thisrnstudy, the writer used a descriptive method. This was used because this method wasrnsuitable for analyzing the data (students’ answer sheet). The subjects of the studyrnwere the eighth grade students of SMP Beringin Kupang in the school yearrn2013/2014. The result of the study shows that The eighth grade students of SMPrnBeringin Kupang in the School Year 2013/2014 are able to comprehend readingrntext.The average of their grade is 6.18 (62%). Based on the standard ofrnmeasurement used in this study, level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPrnBeringin Kupang in the school year 2013/2014 is Fairly Good. Besides that, mostrnof them made concerned with grammar and spelling particularly. Based on thernresult of the study the writer would like to suggest that the English teachers of SMPrnBeringin Kupang to give more practice to the students. It can be done by providingrnvarious reading texts that should be comprehended by students either in class or atrnhome. They should also help them to master the grammar and vocabulary that canrnhelp them comprehending reading text. Further, for the students who had belowrnaverage and poor ability, the writer suggests the teachers to pay more attention forrnthem in comprehending reading text in particular and learning English in general
