ABSTRACTrnrnThis study is entitled A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING CHRONOLOGICAL TEXT USING PICTURES SUPPORTED BY KEY – VISUAL OF THE THIRD YEAR STUDENTS OF SMAK SINT CAROLUS KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2012 /2013. This study was held to find the answer of three questions. (1) Are the third year students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang able to write chronological text using pictures supported by key-visual? (2) What is the ability level of the students in writing chronological text using pictures? (3) What are the area of difficulties in writing chronological text?. This study is focused on grammar and form or organization of writing. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of the method is to explain a situation which is observed while this research done. The subject of this study was the third year students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2012/2013. The total number of the third year students is 82. By using purposive sampling the writer only chose a language class consisting of 20 students to become the respondents of this study. The instrument used for this research was a test based on the pictures supported by key-visual. The data were collected and analyzed. The result of this study indicated that there is no student who got highest score 12 (Excellent), 2 students who got score 10 – 11 (Very Good) with percentage 10,53 %, 15 students who got score 8-9 (Good) with percentage 78,95% and 2 students who got score 6-7 (Average) with percentage 10,53%. There were no students who got score 4 – 5 and 2 – 3 (Below Average and Bad). Based on the result of this study, the writer concluded that the third year students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2012/2013 are able to write chronological text using pictures supported by key-visual. Their level of ability is classified as “GOOD”. Even the student ability level is good there were still many errors made by the students dealing with grammar in using past tense and form. Based on chronological order form is good. Therefore the writer suggests that the English teacher should motivate the students to enrich themselves by mastering vocabulary in order to make a piece of writing easily, understand grammatical rules and read more English text in order to learn and understand how to form the sentences constructing the paragraph in chronological order.rnrn
