A STUDY ON THE LISTENING ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 2 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2013/2014



ABSTRACTrnThis study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE LISTENING ABILITY OF THErnEIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 2 KUPANG IN THErnSCHOOL YEAR 2013/2014”.rnThis study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) are the eighth gradernstudents of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang able to complete and fill the missing words whenrnhearing an English song? (2) what is the ability level of the eighth grade students ofrnSMP Negeri 2 Kupang in complete and filling the missing words when hearing anrnEnglish song?rnThe main objectives of this study were: (1) to find out the ability of the eighth gradernstudents of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in complete and fill the missing words whenrnhearing an English song, (2) to find out the ability level of the eighth grade studentsrnof SMP Negeri 2 Kupang in complete and filling the missing words when hearing anrnEnglish song. Descriptive method was applied to describe the students’ ability levelrnin listening. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2rnKupang in the school year 2013/2014. While the number of subject was 44 students.rnIn collecting data, the writer gave two songs. The songs are Twinkle-Twinkle andrnOver the river and through the woods. The result of the test shows that the eighthrngrade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang are able to complete and filling the missingrnwords when hearing the English songs; and their level of ability is “Good” (8.40).rnBesides, it can be seen that there were 4 students (9%) at excellent level, 19 studentsrn(43%) at very good level, 13 students (30%) at good level, 5 students (11%) at fairlyrngood level and 3 students (7%) at average level. There were no students in belowrnaverage level, poor level, very poor level, bad level and also very bad level.rnBased on the result above, the writer could suggest (1) the English teachers should berncreative in teaching listening and they must balance all skills that they teach, not onlyrnpaying attention to the reading skill but also to listening, speaking, and writing (basedrnon the writer observation.rn(2) the English teacher should teach vocabulary like homonyms and heteronyms,rnbecause it’s the difficulties of listening dealing with sound of words/vocabularies. (3)rnfor the students, they can increase their listening ability by listening to English songs,
