AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING JIGSAW TECHNIQUE IN TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION TO THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SMAK MERCUSUAR KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2013/2014



ABSTRACTrnThis study is entitled “An Experimental Study on The Effectiveness of Using JigsawrnTechnique in Teaching Reading Comprehension to the Second Year Students ofrnSMAK Mercusuar Kupang in the School Year 2013/2014”. The main objective ofrnthe study is to find out whether or not using jigsaw technique effective in improvingrnreading comprehension of the second year students. This study is a quantitative one.rnIn order to achieve the objective of the study, the writer conducted an experimentalrnresearch by using pretest – posttest control group design proposed by Sugiyonorn(2010:112). This experimental research was held at SMAK Mercusuar Kupang. Thernpopulation in this research was the second grade students of SMAK MercusuarrnKupang in the school year 2013/2014. The number of the entire students was 34.Thernwriter conducted research in two classes. The first class (XI IPA-1) was as anrnexperimental group and the second class (XI IPA-2) was as control group. Thernexperimental group was taught using Jigsaw technique, whereas the control grouprnwas taught using conventional method. The instruments of this study were lessonrnplan, pre-test and post-test. The forms of the test are same test for pre-test and posttest.rnThe result of test was tabulated, the scores were presented in five tables. Table 1rnand 2 discussed about the student mastery level on pre-test and post test items ofrnexperimental group. It shows that the total score of pre-test is 92.5 and the sum ofrndeviation scores of pre-test is 5.44. While the total score of post-test items is 120 andrnthe sum of deviation scores is 7.05. Table 3 and 4 discussed about the studentrnmastery level on pre-test and post-test items of control group. It shows that the totalrnscore of pre-test is 93.5 and the sum of deviation scores is 5.5, while the total scorernof post-test is 100.5 and the sum of deviation scores is 5.91. Table 5 discussed aboutrnthe percentage of increasing of experimental and control group. It shows that thernpercentage of increase/decrease of experimental group is 14.14% and control grouprnis 8.59%. The result of this study shows that using jigsaw technique is effective inrnimproving reading comprehension to the second year students of SMAK MercusuarrnKupang. It is shown by the result of experimental group is higher than control grouprn(7.05>5.91) with the total percentage of increase/decrease (14.14%>8.59%). Basedrnon the result of this study the following are some suggestions that needed to bernconsidered: (1) for the teachers of English are expected to use jigsaw as a techniquernin the teaching of reading comprehension, because it can help students to improvernreading skill. By doing Jigsaw, students will not bored in English teaching learningrnprocess because students can interact and share one another about their material.rnTeacher is hoped arrange the teaching and learning process well in order to makernstudents more active and gives respond well to the material. (2) For the students,rnJigsaw is very useful for the passive students to improve their abilities ofrncommunication or the group skill and students are hoped to study more and respondrnin learning process. (3) For other researcher, it is expected that the other researcherrnshould use this writing as the consideration for researching some other problemsrndealing with teaching reading comprehension using jigsaw technique. It is reallyrnpossible that there is another more effective way to teach reading comprehensionrnability. Hopefully, there will be an improvement for the next study.
