ABSTRACTrnThis study is entitled “An Analysis of Word-Search as A Repair Strategy in ThernConversation of The Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang in ThernSchool Year 2012- 2013”. The aims of this study are to answer some followingrnquestions: (1). Do the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang use word search as arnrepair strategy in their conversation? (2).What are the types of word-search used as repairrnstrategy in the conversation of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang? While,rnthe objectives of this study are as follows: (1). To find out whether the eleventh gradernstudents of SMAN 3 Kupang used word search strategy in their conversation. (2).Torndescribe and explain the types of word- search as a repair strategy in their conversation inrnthe eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang.rnThe method used in this study was Descriptive Qualitative Method. The study wasrnconducted in SMA Negeri 3 Kupang, located in W.J.Lalamentik Street, Kupang- EastrnNusa Tenggara Province. The participants of this study were the eleventh grade studentsrnof SAINS program class XI IA1. There are five pairs, they are Angga, Dipo, Une, Ester,rnJean, Melinda, Claudy, Ziah, Dewa and Diah, they are randomly chosen by the writer. Allrnof them are not native speaker of English.rnThe result of this study shows that: (1). Based on the result of the study, it can bernconcluded that the eleventh grade student of SMA Negeri 3, especially class XI IA1 usedrnWord-Search as repair strategy in their conversation. (2).There are four types of WordrnSearch strategies occurred in the conversation of the Student of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang.rnThere are Code- Switching, Repetition, Rising Intonation, and Similar Sounding Word. Itrnwas found that Repetition strategy is the most strategy used by the participants, and thernleast-used strategy is Code Switching (3).The use of strategy in every conversation isrncaused by lacking of knowledge of English, hesitation of using the word, rashly to speakrnfaster, problem of hearing, and do lack of attention more, all of this kind of problemsrnmade the Word Search occur in every conversation.(4). The frequency of Word Searchrnstrategies in English conversation is divided into four categories as follows Code-rnSwitching is 3, Repetition is 8, Rising Intonation is 7, and Similar Sounding Word is 4.rnSo the total occurrence of Word search strategy in the conversation as a whole is 22.rnBased on the result of this study, the writer would like to give some suggestions for thernfollowing persons. (1) The Eleventh Grade Student of SMA Negeri 3 Kupang, need to bernpatient as listeners and don’t need to speak rashly if they don’t have to. They need to talkrnin English everyday in order to get more vocabulary stock to develop their basicrnconversation skill and also to improve their skill in English. They need to be careful onrnusing the words on English because the using pattern of English’ word is not same withrnthe using pattern of Indonesian language, so we can not translate directly into ourrnpattern.(2) The writer suggests also for the English teacher, pay more attention on thernstrategy in conversation, and let the student trying to build the conversation among themrnas long as they can, in this case for the second learner of English, because the strategy can
